Website and email backups are very important to have. We keep a backup of the entire server in the event of a catastophic server failure. If you would like to restore specific files or want to have your own backups of your services then you've come to the right place! Here are the basic steps to set up a backup of your account in Virtualmin. Please keep in mind that doing so will count against your disk usage quota, so we recommend only keeping one full level backup at a time. If you have any questions or trouble setting up a backup, please contact our support and we will be glad to help out.

  1. Sign into Virtualmin and ensure you're on the "Virtualmin" tab
  2. Expand "Backup and Restore" at the bottom of the left-hand navigation and select "Scheduled Backups"
  3. Click on "Add a new backup schedule"
  4. In the "Virtual servers" section:
    1. Select "All virtual servers" or choose the specific domain or sub-domain you want to backup if there are multiple listed.
    2. Check the box for "Include sub-servers of those selected?"
  5. Features and settings section:
    1. You can choose individual features or a set of features to backup. You can also leave this set to "Backup all features" to backup everything.
  6. Destination and format section:
    1. Backup destination: Select "File or directory under virtualmin-backup/" which will be in the home directory of the domain. You can optionally choose an external FTP or SSH server, Amazon S3 storage or Rackspace storage. Enter a file name in the text field under the destination option. If you'd like to date the backup name, you can select "Do strftime-style time substitutions on file or directory name" and then use %d, %m, %y in the file name (such as: mybackup-%y-%m-%d). This will substitute the numerical values of day of the month for %d, month for %m, and year for %y.
    2. Delete old backups: You can set this to "Never" or you can specify an amount of days after which the backup will be deleted. We recommend setting this to the same frequency as the backups. For example, if you are doing a backup every 7 days, set this to delete after 7 days.
    3. Backup format:Single Archive File will create one file for all sub-domains. We recommend this option.
    4. Action on error: We recommend using Halt the backup immediately
    5. Include sub-servers in backup: We recommend Yes
    6. Backup level: Select Full (all files) to backup all files. You can choose another option if it fits your backup schedule
  7. Schedule and reporting section:
    1. Here you can set the email address for reporting and the schedule, and whether you want successful backup reports as well.
    2. Scheduled backup time: The backup frequency is up to you. We recommend setting this the same as the above option about deleting old backups. This way when the new backup is created the old one is deleted to ensure you don't accidentally max your quota with the backups.
  8. Click Create Schedule and you're all set!
